My parents are very reluctant to let this rustbox go.

Kinja'd!!!

Back story; I bought the car 2 weeks ago, get insurance and a temporary plate, mom decides to call it hers, car does not pass safety this week, and now mom will do whatever it takes to make this crapcan pass safety.

Now, she's asking me to bring it to 3 other shops just to see if it really is bad, I just went to one of the best shops in town, which did not approve of my purchase for a very serious reason which I'll get to in the next paragraph, and my parents can be really annoying when they aren't in town.

The rocker panels are pretty much gone, and that is why it did not pass. The flexpipe went bad, (explains the loud exhaust and faint gasoline smell on start up), everything (engine, transmission, differential) is leaking, brake lines are almost rotting away entirely... Never again will i buy a car pressured on me by my parents. The good thing about this thing is that I can sleep in it without any discomfort, if I don't count the smell of wet dog and scattered dog hair in the interior.

I also coincidentally met up with a neighbor across the street (who just got back from College) while working on it, he just bought a car as well, and will gladly take my help doing some repairs.

My plan with the Escape now, is to part it out to get my money back, and buy an actual "Car", instead of a SUV.

Perhaps we could arrange a hit and run...

Plan B, buy a Forester, more fun, AWD is amazing, pretty decent on gas if you don't get an XT, offered and actually easy to find with a 5 speed manual, on the GD impreza chassis (the SG foresters are, 2004-2008) so super easy to upgrade with impreza parts, and you can sleep in it really easily, I've done it many times!

That Escape is not worth saving at all if it's that bad. Part it out and profit, or scrap it. Have they even seen the car in person yet?? It'd be unwise to try to fix it honestly.

My thoughts exactly. I wanted to like this thing so much, but I'll be more than happy to part it out though, the parts are in nice shape, except the shell.
